Whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur or a first-time entrepreneur, knowing what to anticipate in terms of starting expenses may be helpful.

LendingTree experts calculated the typical starting expenses for companies in a variety of sectors using data from the Census Bureau. The majority of entrepreneurs (21%) start their businesses with less than $5,000. However, depending on the sector and other starting variables, the initial expenses may reach $3 million.

The average and median expenses of starting a company are included in our results. Because the average includes companies with millions of dollars in expenses, it often skews high. The median cost represents the halfway point – 50% of companies cost less and 50% of enterprises cost more – and is usually lower than the average.

Methodology

How much it costs to start a business in every industry

Researchers utilized survey data from the US Census Bureau to determine average starting expenses. The entire amount of capital needed to establish or buy a company was calculated and divided by the total number of companies that provided financial projections. Those financial projections were given as a range. To come up with our estimations, we assumed that companies would finance their operations using the average of the range.

For example, 295,500 businesses said they spent $5,000 to $9,999 to get started. We estimated that the typical company in that range utilized $7,500 in total capital, which is midway between $5,000 and $9,999. Companies with expenses of $3 million or more were excluded from the study since we couldn’t generate estimations without a defined range.

The Census supplied distributions that we utilized to estimate median starting costs. We came up with the following starting cost ranges: less than $5,000, $5,000 to $9,999, $10,000 to $24,999, $25,000 to $49,999, $50,000 to $99,999, $100,000 to $249,999, $250,000 to $999,999, $1 million to $2.9 million, and $3 million or more. Assuming that all of the companies were equally spread throughout the range, we calculated how far into the range the median would be, providing us a method to calculate the median.

The data comes from the 2016 Survey of Entrepreneurs conducted by the United States Census Bureau.
